Carolina Chamorro Vina

Carolina Chamorro Vina
PEER Program Coordinator

I am the coordinator of the Pediatric cancer patients and survivors Engaging in Exercise for Recovery (PEER) program. Along with some great volunteers that come from kinesiology, nursing, public health and medical school backgrounds, I supervise this wonderful exercise program for kids and teens affected by cancer. Our program provides kids the opportunity to exercise while having fun in a safe environment.

The best part of my work is the fact that we give the kids the capacity to be kids again. Every smile, every motor, fitness or social improvement that I observe in the kids are invaluable treasures that I preserve.

In Spain, back in 2004, I started to research the effects of exercise in children with cancer. We did a 16 week exercise program with kids on treatment. At the end of the program, the kids were interviewed. A journalist asked a seven-year-old boy what he enjoyed most about the exercise program. He replied “Now I can play with my sister without getting tired.” In that moment, I was the happiest person in the world. Exercise is a great way to counteract the side effects of treatment, improve quality of life and facilitate the reintegration of kids affected by cancer in the community. My dream is to see exercise become part of the standard care in every child with cancer.

I love working for Kids Cancer Care because everyone shares a passion to advocate for improving the quality of life of children affected by cancer and their families. It is an inspiring team to be a part of.

Gail Corbett

Gail Corbett
Manager of Communications

I love words. Finding the right word while writing or stumbling over a beautiful turn of phrase while reading instills in me a deep sense of peace. Something in the universe just seems to line up when words work.

I spend a good part of my days writing — newsletters, annual reports, brochures, media releases, advertising copy, fundraising appeals, speaking notes, web content. The other part of my days, I spend planning and strategizing, scheduling and executing mar-comm plans. I feel fortunate because I can’t think of a worthier cause to work for. The cancer journeys these kids experience are both horrific and heroic. And, what our champions (donors, sponsors, partners, shave hosts, event participants and volunteers) do to transform these young lives both humbles and inspires me. Kids Cancer Care is a life-affirming place to work for and it daily rekindles my faith in humanity. Sharing stories of our vulnerability, our courage, our love and our hope—our wonderful and flawed humanity—is what living is all about.

Fun Facts!

Janessa DeCoste

Janessa DeCoste
Nursing Coordinator

I feel that I truly have the most amazing job at Kids Cancer Care. I have the opportunity to coordinate the medical and nursing aspects associated with the world of oncology camping. A typical camp day consists of seeing children affected by cancer and other blood disorders enjoying their lives to the fullest, by ensuring that they can play and experience camp in the safest way possible.

Most of the year-round work I do, focuses on ensuring that Kids Cancer Care engages in best practices in the field of pediatric hematology and oncology in a unique setting. When I’m not busy doing that, I work on policy and procedure development and reviews, and investigate creative and innovative ways to advance the world of camp nursing. I am blessed to have the opportunity to see these children and their families outside of the clinical setting and thriving.

Pediatric Oncology has always been an area of nursing that I have been very passionate about. Having the opportunity to combine the clinical and camp setting is my dream job and I feel fortunate to have found this perfect balance. I absolutely love working in the clinical setting with these children and their families, but the moments that make my heart truly swell, are the special moments that happen at Camp Kindle or one of our community programs. The stories, special moments and smiles that Kids Cancer Care allows these families to have throughout their journey is what makes this organization so special. I love my job!

I am responsible for our individual and corporate donors. This means on a daily basis, I may be thanking a donor, researching prospective donors to help fund and expand our programs, welcoming a donor to our monthly giving program, updating donor information so they can receive our newsletter or sharing stories on how a donor’s gift is impacting the lives of children.

I love giving back and now I have an opportunity to give back AND teach the teens the importance of helping their community. It just feels right.

No day is a ‘typical’ day! Most of my days involve planning workshops, meetings or volunteer opportunities for the teen leadership program or planning and fundraising for our annual travel project, where we build homes for families in need.

In the summer, I lead the recreation parent program (Dragon Boat training and festival). In between those three programs, I lead the following family events; Cool Yule, Mother’s Day Brunch and Survivor Day.

I love what I do, because each day is different, challenging and fun! When asked why I work at Kids Cancer Care, I couldn’t dream of working anywhere else! From day one I knew that I was lucky to be working for such an amazing organization surrounded by an amazing group of people.

I am an event coordinator at Kids Cancer Care and I plan and execute three signature events, which raise money for the foundation. From our staff, vendors, committee members and volunteers, everyone is working hard toward a common goal. The wonderful families that we support during their cancer journeys are what both inspire me and motivate me each and every day.

When I’m not planning our next great event, you can catch me traveling with my husband, out for a run along the river pathways, stuck in a great book, planning my next adventure, looking for an excuse to be near the ocean, eating chocolate, or exploring the city of Calgary which I now call home.

I'll remember you though. This is a very special quote to me as this is what I believe within my own family as well as at Kids Cancer Care. Everyone that works here is family to me and has a special place in my heart whether they still work here or have moved on.

I feel honoured to raise funds for the deserving families that Kids Cancer Care supports. The best part of my job is knowing that in some small way, I am helping families through one of the most difficult times of their lives.

I have had the opportunity to meet the most amazing and brave kids through my time at Kids Cancer Care. These families inspire me every day. I am also inspired by the team around me and the volunteers that donate countless hours to our cause.

I believe in giving back to the community and I feel like I am making a difference at Kids Cancer Care. My favourite part of the job is seeing the smile on the kids’ faces when they enjoy their meal and refuel to go out play and enjoy camp! A highlight for me was when one young camper told me, "You make food better than my Mom.”

My day to day includes overseeing the food and beverage operations at Camp Kindle to ensure that we are always striving to exceed our guests’ expectations. I ensure that the product is of highest possible quality with regards to food safety; I prepare healthy and nutritional meals; oversee presentation and menu selection with fresh, local and sustainable ingredients. To effectively lead our culinary department, I am always recruiting, developing, and coaching a team of professionals who will continually strive to be the best kitchen brigade there is. In the end, I believe the food speaks for itself – so I hope to see you at Camp Kindle soon!
