SunRise

Age 3 to 7

A full-filled day-camp where kids can play, explore and discover!

SunRise is a private day camp held at recreational centres in Calgary and Edmonton. This unique experience for children aged three to seven includes field trips, arts and crafts and visits from clowns, firefighters, magicians, and other exciting folk. SunRise gives kids a chance to connect with other kids their age, while experiencing loads of summer fun.

Please note, that this year there will not be a sleepover.

SunMaker

Age 7 to 15
NEW SunChaser program open to teens 15 to 17 (see below)

This program is uniquely designed for children who are undergoing or have undergone treatment for cancer, as well as their siblings.

SunMaker offers youth ages 7 to 15 a one-week sleepover camp experience. With focused oncology nursing staff adding to our staff team, campers have a safe and supportive environment to just be kids! SunMaker campers experience all that Camp Kindle has to offer – swimming, ropes courses, arts and crafts, climbing wall, games, campfires and so much more! Additionally, campers have a chance to delve deeper into a skill area of their choice. SunMaker helps give campers a sense of community and place to belong as staff guide campers in fostering friendships and developing self-confidence.

SunHaven

Age 7 to 15
NEW SunChaser program for teens 15 to 17 (see below)

This program is uniquely designed for children who have a parent with cancer or who have lost a parent to cancer.

SunHaven offers youth ages 7 to 15 a one week sleepover camp experience. Camp Kindle is a place where kids can set aside their worries for a week of fun and laughter with children in similar circumstances. SunHaven campers experience all that Camp Kindle has to offer – swimming, ropes courses, arts and crafts, climbing wall, games, campfires and so much more!  Additionally, campers will have a chance to delve deeper into a skill area of their choice. SunHaven gives young people a sense of community and a place to belong as staff guide campers in fostering friendships and developing self-confidence.

SunChaser *New Program*

Ages 15 to 17

This leadership program is designed to develop and challenge youth through on-site camp experiences at Camp Kindle. SunChaser is open to campers who have completed our SunMaker or SunHaven programs.

SunChaser is designed for youth who have finished our Camp Kindle programs but still wish to be involved in the hustle and bustle on site. Participants will develop skills in teamwork, communication and leadership, while also enjoying the magic of camp and a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities. 

*Please note: Teens on active or maintenance treatment are welcome in this program.  

 

Session 1: July 17 - 21, 2017

SunSeeker 1

Age 15

This Leadership program is designed to develop and challenge youth through outdoor experiences. SunSeeker 1 is open to campers who have completed our SunMaker or SunHaven programs.

SunSeeker 1 offers youth the opportunity to stretch their wings and explore personal development in the great outdoors. Based out of our SunSeeker Lodge at Camp Kindle, participants will help cook their own meals and learn outdoor survival skills such as fire starting. They will also spend time developing teamwork and communication skills before heading off on further adventures off site! While camping off site, youth will participate in excursions such as hiking, canoeing and horseback riding.

SunSeeker 2

Age 16

This program is helps youth to build upon the outdoor and leadership skills introduced in SunSeeker 1.

Youth in SunSeeker 2 will continue in honing the skills learned in SunSeeker 1. More extensive out-trips will include multi-day canoeing and camping as well as new adventures around geo-caching and kayaking. Participants will be based out of our SunSeeker Lodge at Camp Kindle and will help cook meals and actively participate in the planning their adventures.

*Please note: Due to the sometimes remote activities, we are unable to accept campers on active treatment in this program.

Leadership Development Program (LDP)

Age 17

This program is the culmination of our Leadership experiences and is developed for youth who have completed our SunSeeker or SunChaser programs.

The Leadership Development Program is a two week experience. Participants will be actively involved in progressive workshops centered on leadership both at camp and in the greater world. Participants will take a role in the execution of camp activities, such as theme days and morning activities. They will be placed with groups of younger campers to have supervised practice in leading and assisting campers. An offsite excursion and camp legacy project round out this final exciting camper year.

Leadership Exchange 2017

Are you ready for a new camp adventure in a different part of the country? Are you a young leader between 16 and 17 years of age? Do you currently or have you had cancer? You may be eligible to take part in Leadership Exchange 2017 at Camp Oochigeas this summer in Muskoka, Ontario.

Applications are now closed for 2017. Please check back in early 2018 for next year's application details.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Kids Cancer Care accepts applications from young leaders between the ages of 16 and 17 who are interested in participating in our Leadership Exchange program with Camp Oochigeas in Muskoka, Ontario. 

There are two spots open in this exchange program, which is offered free of charge through generous donor support at Camp Ooch. Kids Cancer Care will provide return airfare to the successful candidates. The selected teens will be required to pre-register with Camp Ooch similar to registering for Kids Cancer Care summer camps. During the exchange program candidates will have the opportunity to attend a two-week Leader-in-Training program or a two-week outdoor leadership program similar to SunSeeker. Upon arriving in Toronto, the teens will be under the care and supervision of Camp Oochigeas staff.

Successful candidates may choose between two sessions:

Leader in Training (LIT 1)    Sunday, July 9 to Friday, July 21, 2017
Leader in Training (LIT 2) Sunday, July 23 to Friday, August 4, 2017

 

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible, teens must 

  • Be 16 to 17 years of age
  • Have or have had cancer
  • Be a member of our Teen Leadership Program (or have participated in SunSeeker or our Leadership Development Program)

HOW TO APPLY

Eligible teens must submit the following:

  1. Personal resume, detailing experience, education, leadership involvement and volunteer experience along with a list of certifications
  2. Personal essay about yourself, describing your leadership experience and how you would benefit from the leadership exchange and how you plan to use the experience to help others in the future  
  3. Indicate preferred session dates in the application
